Spring has Sprung
Spring has Sprung
The vineyard is such a magical place. Arandell has some infestation of Scale last year and we had to remove the dead cordons and now the vineyard is in repair. These vines are some of the oldest in the world and I can't tell you how valuable this grape is to our production. It makes our number one selling wine. Don't be fooled in thinking we spray glyphosate (roundup) as we are not a fan. What you see is high levels of Nitrogen that burns the top of the grass under the vine. We are very committed to limited chemicals, thus the infestation of the scale. This field usually produces about 4 ton of grapes, but last year, the vines were dying and still trying to produce a crop. The yield was 1 ton. The pruning practices we had to take this year will help the vine recover. We have created new cordons. If you look closely you will see a fat trunk (older wood) and the thinner canes coming up creating the new cordon. Between the drought and the infestation, we have to be very cautious this year in how much fruit we will let this vine carry. Your wine begins in the vineyard (and we need to make sure the vine is capable of producing excellent fruit) and it's health is our number one concern. We will monitor it's development. Last year we watered and fertilized this field doing all we could to give it the best chance to grow back healthy.
